Thrifty Treasure from Friday Morning

If you haven't visited Rhoda's blog, be sure to check out this week's Fun over at Southern Hospitality:

So I ventured out on a HOT TEXAS morning to visit one garage sale located near our home. At first sight I thought I wasn't going to find anything, BUT that all changed when I spotted this Drexel Buffet. I have been looking for an older furniture piece that could be modified to work as a TV stand for our 46" HDTV. It is dated 1957 on the back and is in very good condition. I have no idea what the wood happens to be--anyone care to guess? All the hardware is present.
I quickly took some photos, even before cleaning and polishing it properly.

Hidden behind the doors is plenty of storage, plus a shelf that can probably be modified to hold a Blu-Ray DVD player!

There are 2 drawers--the larger one has some divided areas that are lined with what might be an anti-tarnish fabric. Perfect for holding remote controls!

And see that tiny drawer at the top? It is actually a removable TRAY, complete with slots for hand carrying! I just found that surprise while taking the photos!

So you may be wondering what I paid for this treasure--probably too much: $80.00????
How do you think I did?

Well, here I am. Could be mahogany veneer...is it reddish? Or walnut if it is brownish. Great find either way. Love the collar on that cute pug.

Well, that's the prettiest TV stand I've ever seen! So much nicer that the kind that anyone can buy at the store!

I see Joan mentioned mahogany veneer. It looks like a couple of lyre side tables, we have. They are mahogany veneer. It's an absolutely beautiful piece!

I, too, think it is mahogany veneer. Is it possible that the top drawer is a compartment that holds silverware? Try a little Old English furniture polish on it. Great find!

that will be a great tv stand.
My guess it is cherry
$80 - doesn't sound too bad - used prices vary so much.

I'm going to guess Cherry too! I think it's great Suzanne, Beautiful piece and if it works for your purpose, all the better. Love old Drexel Heritage, so I think you did great. What could you buy new for $80? Not much, some junk that's for sure!

Oh, if you need to wipe over some scratches, try Howard's Restore-A finish, found at most antique stores. It's great stuff. Covers all the little scratches.

That buffect will make a perfect TV stand. I love that the first drawer is also a tray! How fabulous is that?!

Great buy, for SF Bay Area standards!

Great tv stand! Happy 4th. :O)

Suzanne, that piece is solid wood mahogany veneer and that is a good thing! As an older Drexel piece it is most likely solid wood underneath, not the pressed wood or cardboard that is so prevalent in today's manufacturing. You got a bargain, girl!!! I'm in the furniture biz, so I'm always checking stuff out... Glad you stopped by. :-) Sue

That is gorgeous! My guess is mahogany - not veneer, but solid wood. Love all the details - what a steal! Linda

Beautiful and perfect for your TV. You certainly can't buy a new tv stand for $80.00 and older things just have much more character.

I am so jealous! This is a wonderful piece and I have been watching our local Craigs list for one just like it to compliment my 30's era Duncan and Phyfe set. I need more storage for all my dishes. I saw several while I was out of work, but now that I have a paycheck again I never see them. My set is mahogany veneer, so I assume that your cabinet is a well.
